Location

Coromandel Homestead is located a stone’s throw from the main hub of historic Berrima Village, and a short drive from the regional towns and villages of the Southern Highlands. There is a wide choice of things to do in the area, from gorgeous river walks and picnics, to tasting fine wines or boutique shopping. Below are just some ideas to get you started.

DRINKING AND DINING: Berrima’s eclectic dining scene boasts a range of options with something to suit all tastes. For an easy and delicious breakfast or lunch, you can’t beat the Berrima Bakehouse, General Store, Josh’s Café or the Courtyard. Sweet treats and great coffee can be found at Berrima’s branch of the Gumnut Patisserie, or Magpies café, and Willow and Chai is a must visit for ice creams on a summer’s day. If you are after great burgers and fries, pop into Schmokin’.  For drinks with a vibe, you can’t beat the scene at Berrima Vault House, or head to the historic Surveyor General Inn for a more traditional pub feel. And Berrima even has its own hatted restaurant, Eschalot, for a fine dining experience (make sure you book ahead as it is very popular!).

ART: Art lovers are spoilt for choice with a selection of galleries in the Southern Highlands. Berrima village has two gorgeous art galleries, Michael Read Southern Highlands and Whitewall Art Projects. Both are worth a look while you are exploring the village. The Southern Highlands is home to a lot of creative talent, and there are too many galleries to list here - however if you appreciate truly great art then a visit to Ngununggula Southern Highlands Regional Gallery is an absolute must do.

ANTIQUES: As for antiques, once again the Southern Highlands is a wonderland of treasures, and there are simply too many fabulous haunts to list here. Berrima village has Sticky Beaks Emporium and Village Antiques. Further afield, a visit to the iconic Dirty Janes in Bowral, the Ferris Wheel (also in Bowral), Sally Beresford Antiques in Moss Vale and finally the very beautiful Lydie du Bray Antiques in Mittagong would be our top picks.

SHOPS:  For speciality stores, just stroll along Berrima’s main street and you will find a range of things (from global teas to old fashioned lollies, beautiful cashmere to country homewares – just to name a few). There are so many great places to shop not only in Berrima but also in the nearby villages and towns. Take your time and enjoy!

WINERIES: If wineries are on the itinerary, then Coromandel is perfectly located. PepperGreen Estate is a healthy walk (or 2 minute drive) up the road. Further afield (a short drive away) you can visit the fabulous Joadja Estate, taste wine at Bendooley Estate (and visit the Book Barn), or enjoy an afternoon at Artemis Wines, Centennial Vineyards, or the Southern Highlands Winery, among many others in the Southern Highlands region. If spirits are more your idea of fun, then a drive to historic Joadja township to visit the Joadja Distillery is a must.

HISTORY: Berrima village was established in 1831 and is one of Australia’s best preserved Georgian colonial villages. A stroll through the village will showcase to you some great examples of Georgian architecture from the old gaol and courthouse, to fine historic homes and gardens such as Harpers Mansion and maze, as well as the old churches and inns. For history buffs we recommend a visit to the Berrima District Museum and taking it from there.

NATURE: The Wingecaribee River meanders through the village and a walk along its banks and through the nature reserve is a joy. The village playground and park is a hit with younger visitors and a great place to stretch your legs with a coffee outdoors.

WEDDINGS: Coromandel Homestead is also the perfect spot for wedding guests and bridal parties to stay. We are conveniently close to several wedding venues, such as Bendooley Estate (7 minutes), Centennial Vineyards (12 minutes), Montrose House (13 minutes), Somerley House (13 minutes), Southern Highlands Winery (14 minutes), Mount Ashby Estate (19 minutes) and Osborn House (23 minutes). Please note that whilst our gardens make a sublime backdrop for bridal photos, we do not host weddings, parties or events at Coromandel Homestead.
